This (which I found on Americablog.com) is perfect, injecting into the already-inexplicable oddness of the lolcats meme all the madness of this moose-dressing, polar-bear-deregulating, press-conference-fleeing VP candidate.
There’s something about lolcats that weirds me out. Is it just idiotic, or is there something clever there? Is it simply the apotheosis of internet stupidity, or an apotheosis that brilliantly lays bare the underlying conditions? Whatever, whenever I think of the walrus bucket meme I chuckle involuntarily, not sure why I am laughing and disconcerted by that uncertainty.
Btw, Chris Rock was really hilarious in his extended comparison of Palin to Michael Vick (vis a vis animal cruelty).
p.s. Wikipedia on lolcats.
We love LOLcats. What’s not to love? There are cats. Things are misspelled. And as this proves, it’s good even without cats.
For me it’s the same sheer joy I get when students use wildly wrong and inappropriate (but phonetically similar) words, or make “serious” claims that are nevertheless hilariously phrased. Ain’t it all part of the “(il)literacy continuum”?
Picking up on the lolcat motif, (since it’s so much more appealing than current events)— OK here’s my theory: our cats are our household gods. We had to give them their own special language, that is we had to put words in their mouths (balloon captions coming out of their heads), because we have to believe we have communication with them. Why do we give them pidgin-baby- first grade speller language? It is to present their wisdom in a hidden way, like the court fool. And in such a way that we don’t have to admit that they run our lives.
Great points! Also, speech is supposed to belong only to human beings. Animals are defined by not speaking, and cats are (or can be) especially silent. This makes them seem more diffferent/other, inhuman, wise and mysterious. I guess in a way this makes me disapprove of lolcats because it is an attempt to replace that with foolish/cute language. I have less of a problem with this with the walruses.
she’s so cute
